TORONTO – Both Rogers Communications and Bell Media have trimmed some personnel this month, Cartt.ca has learned – but the number of people leaving both companies is not near the rumoured figures we have seen land in the Cartt.ca email inbox.
We heard from a handful of people over a week ago that 200 people were let go from Rogers one day and then today that 200 were let go from Bell Media.
While we do know some definitely lost their jobs, the companies would not comment on how many positions were eliminated, but spokespeople insisted to us the rumoured number mentioned above is much too high. Most of those affected have been managers and directors. The highest ranking executive we have confirmed is leaving is Rogers vice-president of content and programming operations Jon Medline.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to improve our end-to-end customer experience, drive growth and streamline how we operate, we make adjustments to our team from time to time,” said a Rogers spokesperson in response to Cartt.ca.
“We’ve reduced the number of positions in some Bell Media departments, which has led to a limited number of departures. The changes reflect the financial pressures facing Bell Media and the overall broadcasting sector as we confront rapid technological change and growing international competition for both viewers and advertising revenue,” said a Bell spokesperson.
