CBS Stages Canada to open by mid-2019
TORONTO – CBS is building a large-scale television and film production facility just outside of Toronto, creating more production space for CBS Television Studios content shot on this side of the border.
The U.S. broadcast giant said Wednesday that it has secured a long-term lease on a 260,000 square-foot space in Mississauga that it will dub CBS Stages Canada, a multi-use production facility that will include six soundstages, production offices, support facilities and auxiliary services for its productions. It is expected to be opened by mid-2019.
Toronto-based production executives John Weber and Frank Siracusa, who are executive producers on CBS Television Studios’ Star Trek: Discovery, will oversee the development of the project and ongoing management of the production facility.
CBS Television Studios currently produces 63 series for the CBS Television Network, The CW, the CBS All Access streaming service, as well as networks and platforms outside of CBS. At present, Star Trek: Discovery and In The Dark are shot in Toronto, in addition to several other productions in Canada, including the reboot of Charmed (pictured).
“CBS has a strong production history in Canada,” said CBS Television Studios president David Stapf, in the news release. “The Toronto area specifically has provided our series with diverse and appealing locations as well as production infrastructure and crafts expertise that cannot be easily found. These new stages will provide valuable resources and additional capacity for our Company’s growing production slate.”
