CMF adds new industry, market trends director
MONTREAL and TORONTO – Netflix has tapped Stéphane Cardin as its new director of public policy for Canada where he will lead its regulatory affairs and industry relations.
According to a La Presse report, Cardin (pictured) will be based in Montreal and report to the streaming giant’s global government relations team in Washington. He will begin his new role in mid-September.
Cardin has been VP of industry and public affairs at Canada Media Fund (CMF) since 2006, and held a senior role with the Société de development des enterprises culturales du Québec (SODEC) prior to that, continues the report.
When contacted by Cartt.ca, a Netflix spokesperson issued a brief statement, though declined to confirm Cardin’s new title.
"Stéphane brings a wealth of experience and insights to the Netflix policy team as we continue to invest in Canada’s world class creative and production talent,” reads the emailed statement.
CMF subsequently issued a statement thanking Cardin for his “tireless efforts” over the past 12 years, with president and CEO Valerie Creighton adding “I am certain that the Canadian screen-based sector will continue to have in Stéphane a staunch ally and supporter and that in his new role, he will continue to be a champion of Canadian production.”
The same statement also announced that Catherine Mathys will take on the role of director of industry and market trends beginning September 5 “to ensure the CMF continues its important work of gathering and curating industry and market intelligence.”
“Catherine is an award-winning Québec journalist with decades of expertise in media analysis and coverage of new technologies”, added Creighton. “She is based in Montréal and will bring with her a new perspective on our relationships with content consumption and technology, and its impact on the Canadian audiovisual industry.”
