MONTREAL — Director-producer Roland Emmerich’s newest mega-production, Midway, will be filming this fall at TVA Group’s MELS Studios soundstages in Montreal, the production unit announced Thursday.

Emmerich is known for producing worldwide blockbuster movies, such as the Independence Day franchise, The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down.

His latest mega-film is based on the true story of the Battle of Midway, a turning point in the Pacific theatre of World War II. Midway chronicles the heroic and harrowing exploits of the soldiers and aviators who achieved the unbelievable to turn the tide of the war, MELS Studios said in a news release.

Midway will be directed by Emmerich and was written by Wes Tooke. Confirmed cast members include Woody Harrelson, Mandy Moore and Luke Evans. The film is being produced by Emmerich’s Centropolis Entertainment, Harald Kloser and Mark Gordon. Starlight Entertainment Group and Jixiang Entertainment are financing the film.

“We are proud to welcome director Roland Emmerich back to Montreal and MELS for his latest mega-film, Midway, which will provide work for our local film crews and the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise and know-how as well as generate significant economic benefits,” said Michel Trudel, president of MELS, in the news release.

“In a way, it’s a homecoming for Roland since he loves shooting in Montreal, at MELS, where he made both Day After Tomorrow and White House Down,” added Marco Shepherd, senior vice-president of production and development, at Centropolis Entertainment.

MELS Studios will host the film crew for Midway from September 25 to December 7, 2018.
