TORONTO — Indigenous productions are getting a financial boost from the Canada Media Fund (CMF) with the announcement of $7.6 million in funding awarded through CMF’s Aboriginal Program to 14 new projects.
Applications for funding were evaluated by a jury composed of individuals from Indigenous communities, including Tina Keeper (Norway House Cree Nation), Elizabeth LaPensée (Anishnaabe), Melissa Mollen Dupuis (Innu Nation) and Sylvain Rivard (Abenaki Nation). Together, the four jurors bring complementary skill sets, including Indigenous-led audiovisual production, contemporary visual arts and storytelling, and knowledge of several Indigenous languages, the CMF said in a news release to announce its latest Aboriginal production funding.
As a result of this round of funding, Canadian and international audiences will enjoy 10 documentaries, three children’s and youth programs, and one drama series. Three of the projects are from Alberta, one from B.C., one from Manitoba, four from Nunavut, two from Ontario, and three from Quebec.
With this additional $7.6 million in funding, the CMF has invested more than $60.2 million in 140 Canadian Aboriginal productions through the Aboriginal Program since 2010. Aboriginal producers also access funding across several other CMF programs, including the Northern Incentive and the Performance Envelop Program.
