OTTAWA – One in seven Canadians (13%) have pirated TV content or movies in the past month, and those without a paid TV service are twice as likely to engage in this behaviour, according to new research from the Media Technology Monitor (MTM).

Key topics this year, according to its free Sneak Peek report, include e-sports, pirating TV, early technology adopters, Francophones watching English content, and smart speakers.  The MTM Sneak Peek Report is being offered as well as the English- and French-language Media and Technology Adoption Reports and the most recent spring 2018 data set, available to subscribers on the MTM Portal.

Highlights from the Sneak Peek Report include:

– Watching others play video games online has become a multi-million dollar industry, and one in five online Canadians have taken part;

– One in 10 Canadians consider themselves to be ‘Early Adopters’, meaning they’re the first in their circle of friends to invest in new gadgets or technology;

– Close to three in five Francophones are watching English-language TV and movie content, and half of those are doing so weekly; and

– After a strong marketing push in the first quarter of 2018, 8% of Canadians report owning a smart speaker and the Google Home speaker ranks first in popularity.

MTM is a research product of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC/Radio Canada).
