TORONTO – TLN Media Group will mark Seniors’ Month in Ontario with a month-long national multilingual Elder Abuse Prevention Public Service Announcement campaign across its TV networks and online.
One in five Canadians believe they know of a senior who may be experiencing some form of abuse, according to Employment and Social Development Canada. Seniors from all walks of life are vulnerable to elder abuse and it is happening in communities across Canada. Most cases happen at home and go unreported due to fear, social stigma and the desire to protect the family members involved.
Three 30-second PSA messages in English, Spanish and Italian will air throughout the schedules of TLN Television, Univision Canada and Mediaset Italia, respectively, for the month of June.
“Our aim here is to raise awareness of the existence of elder abuse and encourage people to intervene and prevent it”, said TLN Media Group president Aldo Di Felice, in the news release. “It is important that seniors and others have access to information to make informed decisions and recognize that elder abuse is not acceptable in Canadian society. For Canadians whose languages of comfort are immigrant languages, it is especially critical to reach out to them effectively in those non-official languages with important societal messages like this. We have been media leaders of our ethnic communities for 35 years, and members of these communities our entire lives.”
