OTTAWA – While the majority of Canadians say that they are aware of skinny basic TV packages and pick and pay TV, only a fraction have actually subscribed to these options, according to a new report from Media Technology Monitor (MTM).

Skinny Basic and Pick & Pay: Analysis of the Canadian Market explores awareness, interest and adoption of the $25 Starter TV packages, also called Skinny Basic TV packages, and the pick and pay TV option which enables the purchase of standalone TV channels on a per basis cost.

Highlights from the report include:

– Over half of Canadians report being aware of Skinny Basic/Starter TV packages, but just over 1 in 10 TV subscribers say that they have taken advantage of this type of subscription;

– Almost one third (29%) of TV subscribers say that they have added individual channels or bundles to their TV programming packages; and

– Potential cord cutters, a group of Canadians who report being “Very Likely” or “Somewhat Likely” to cancel their TV subscription, show far more interest in Starter TV Packages and Pick & Pay than other Canadians.

MTM is a research product of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC/Radio Canada).
