EDMONTON and WINNIPEG — Local news is getting a revitalized approach in Edmonton and Winnipeg as CityNews announced Thursday its new nightly newscasts in those cities will focus on viewer-driven, original stories that keep local residents up-to-speed on the latest news that matters most.

With the launch of CityNews Edmonton and CityNews Winnipeg, the news programs’ video journalists will be out from behind the news desk and in the community, seeking out the hyper-local stories that matter most to local residents in those markets, parent company Rogers Communications said in two separate press releases announcing the launch of the shows.

“Our CityNews team is changing the landscape of traditional news,” said Scott Fralick, supervising producer, City Edmonton, in a press release. “Delivering hard-hitting journalism from the streets of the city will appeal to younger Edmontonians, with credible content in real time.”

Joining CityNews Edmonton as video journalists are Randi-Marie Adams, Rachelle Elsiufi, Haweya Fadal, Carly Robinson, Hayley Stelmack and Courtney Theriault.

“With CityNews, we’re excited to be adding a new voice to the local news community,” said Laura Lewandoski, supervising producer, City Winnipeg, in a press release. “Taking a different approach and adding a fresh perspective to local stories, CityNews is set to break the mould of traditional news in this city.”

CityNews Winnipeg’s on-air team will feature Lisa Charleyboy, Stefanie Lasuik, Erica Natividad, Mark Neufeld, Courtney Rutherford and Sarolta Saskiw.

The new CityNews Edmonton and CityNews Winnipeg programs will both premiere Monday, Sept. 4, as one-hour newscasts, broadcast seven days a week at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. local time.
