BARRIE, ON – Corus’ 101.1 BIG FM has added radio personality Melanie Martin to its morning show team. Martin (pictured) started Tuesday alongside Kris Bawden as co-host of BIG Mornings.
An award-winning radio host with 14 years of experience in major market morning radio, Martin’s longest running show, The JJ and Melanie Morning Show, ran on Flow 93.5 in Toronto for 10 years. Previously, she was an integral part of the Scott Fox, Melanie and Dave show on Z103.5 in Toronto, has been featured as an entertainment expert on television, plus hosted numerous entertainment and charitable events.
In related news, Corus-owned CHAY-FM in Barrie (branded as 93.1 Fresh Radio), celebrated 40 years on the radio over the weekend. When the station launched in 1977, AM radio still ruled the airwaves and CHAY-FM became the first ‘stand alone’ FM radio station in Canada, meaning it didn’t have an AM sister station to pay the bills, says Corus.
The call letters were created by Barrie business entrepreneur and station founding partner Arch Brown. CHAY is the traditional Huron word of welcome, meaning “hello” or “good day”, and the station tied in to the historical significance of the call letters by respecting and honouring the word “CHAY” with announcer-read on-air liners throughout each broadcast day.
