OAKVILLE, ON – Pelmorex Media founder, chairman, president and CEO Pierre Morrissette was named to the Order of Canada on December 30, 2016.
Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System, and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
After beginning his career with the Royal Bank of Canada in 1972, Morrissette held senior roles with Telemedia Communications Inc. (CFO 1977-1983) and Canadian Satellite Communications Inc. (Cancom) (CEO 1983-1989) before founding Pelmorex Media Inc. in 1989.
Pelmorex is the parent company of The Weather Network and MétéoMédia in Canada as well as Spain’s leading weather provider, Eltiempo.es. It also operates Canada’s National Alert Aggregation Dissemination System, which is designed to deliver critical and potentially life-saving alerts to Canadians through TV and radio stations, as well as TV service providers. The system was developed by Pelmorex Media in partnership with federal, provincial and territorial emergency management officials, Environment Canada and the broadcast industry.
As a strong advocate for the next generation of entrepreneurs, Morrissette is a member of the Ivey Business School Advisory Board and in 2007, the Pierre L. Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship was named in his honour. In 2006, he was inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame for his contribution to the industry and community.
Morrissette is also committed to mental wellness among children and adolescents. He is the founder and a trustee of the Pierre L. Morrissette Family Foundation and the Mental Wellness Network Foundation which supports Family Navigation programs offered by the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. These programs have been designed to assist children, adolescents and their families navigate through the mental health and addictions system.
