MONTREAL – Videotron is gearing up to roll out 1 Gbps Internet service.

The company said Tuesday that it is now deploying Docsis 3.1 modems on its network and adapting its equipment and working protocols to soon offer the faster service, that will boast speeds of up to 10 Gbps for downloads and 1 Gbps for uploads.

Beta testing is underway now at select Montreal-area homes and businesses.  Videotron said that it will be able to roll out Docsis 3.1 very quickly in areas where its existing network has been upgraded, and that customers will require a new modem and a software upgrade to sign on for the service.

"With this deployment, we are laying the first stones in the foundations of the Internet of the future”, said Videotron president and CEO Manon Brouillette, in the news release.  “We will be able to offer better Internet access service that meets the growing speed and bandwidth needs of our customers, who are watching more and more HD and UHD videos and adopting the cloud, the Internet of Things, augmented reality and virtual reality."
