Shomi marks one year of Canada-wide streaming

TORONTO – Rogers' and Shaw's streaming service shomi celebrated the first anniversary of its national debut on August 20 by releasing a series of fun facts, but still no subscriber numbers.

One year after launching direct-to-consumers, the TV and movie streamer boasts 118 exclusive series, more than 143 million total video plays, and said that February 15, (which was Family Day in AB, SK, and ON), was its top viewing holiday, followed by Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Other highlights include:

– Peak consumption hours are 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM;

– Top 3 most popular genres are Comedy, Kids & Family, and Drama;

– Top 10 most popular series are Sons of AnarchyModern Family2 Broke GirlsFresh Off the Boat, Vikings, Jane the Virgin, Empire, American Horror Story, Mr. Robot, and New Girl;

– Top 5 most popular movies are The GiftThe Divergent Series: InsurgentHopDespicable Me, and Empire State; and

– The most searched actor is Adam Sandler and the most searched actress is Shailene Woodley.

Jointly owned by Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications, shomi launched in beta mode in November 2014 to Rogers and Shaw Internet and cable customers. The partners have not made any official announcements on shomi's total number of subscribers, although one report published earlier this year made some estimates.
