VANCOUVER and CALGARY — Shaw Communications and SeaBus ferry operator TransLink are expanding WiFi access to all SeaBus ferries in Vancouver as part of their ongoing partnership.

Ferry passengers who travel between downtown Vancouver and the North Shore will be able to text, tweet and email during their commute without incurring costly data charges, the companies said in a news release.

“Until now, commuters have been able to enjoy complimentary access at both terminals,” Greg Pultz, vice-president of operations for Calgary-based Shaw Communications, said in the news release. “As of today, anyone and everyone who wants it has access to fast WiFi from the moment they enter the ferry terminal to the moment they leave the destination terminal.”

From the time that free WiFi access was launched in Vancouver’s Waterfront and Lonsdale Quay terminals in December 2015 until the end of July 2016, SeaBus commuters have used more than one million megabytes of data on the ShawGuest network alone, according to Shaw usage data.

“Customers have told us that access to a fast and reliable WiFi connection is important to them and we are excited to see this service available on all of our SeaBus vessels and at terminals,” Derrick Cheung, vice-president of strategic sourcing and real estate for TransLink, said in the news release. “Providing enhanced safety, security and convenience for customers and our operators is made possible through our collaboration with Shaw and comes at no cost to taxpayers.”

Ferry passengers who are not Shaw customers can access Show Go WiFi by selecting “ShawGuest” from the list of available WiFi networks. Shaw Internet customers will automatically connect if they have used Shaw Go WiFi before.
