INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Consumers with FM radio compatible smartphones may now tune in to FM radio on their devices thanks to the Canadian launch of the NextRadio app.
Available now in the Google Play store in Canada, the app allows users a real-time view of what’s playing on-air, the ability to purchase a song that’s playing, and access to emergency updates if cell coverage goes down. It also claims that it uses 75% less battery and 20x less data compared to streaming radio apps.
"Our initial broadcaster partners in Canada are very excited about the value NextRadio brings to their listeners, as well as, the new radio advertising platform and data NextRadio can provide their advertisers", said Paul Brenner, president of NextRadio parent TagStation, in the news release. "This expansion was a natural next step as many handset makers provide the same phones in Canada, making it easier for them to turn on the FM Chip for both countries at the same time."
The NextRadio hybrid radio smartphone app, developed by TagStation with partial funding from NAB Labs, uses cloud services to provide FM radio on smartphones and tablets by combining the devices' built-in FM tuner and the internet.
