IN A MOVE THAT WILL SURELY not go unnoticed by Canadian regulators, broadcasters and content creators, the European Commission is drafting a proposal recommending that U.S. streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon be forced to offer more European content.
According to a Business Insider report, the proposal will subject on-demand video platforms to the same rules at broadcasters, requiring them to ensure that 20% of the content they offer is European in origin.
The report quotes Netflix as saying that “rigid numerical quotas risk suffocating the market for on-demand audiovisual media services”.
