New Canadian business channel building audience quickly

TORONTO – Bloomberg TV Canada announced Amanda Lang, anchor of Canadian business news program Bloomberg North, will be co-anchoring Bloomberg’s flagship morning program Bloomberg <GO> from its headquarters in New York as a guest anchor all this week.

The move shows that Bloomberg TV Canada, operated in Canada by Channel Zero, is now well-assimilated into the Bloomberg global franchise.

“In less than six months, Bloomberg TV Canada is now fully integrated into the global Bloomberg platform. Our anchors and reporters are bringing outstanding coverage of the most important Canadian stories to terminal users and audiences across Canada and around the world,” said Michael Bancroft, executive producer of Bloomberg TV Canada, in a press release.

The channel also announced the ongoing expansion of its coverage. Jamie Sturgeon, Markets reporter for Bloomberg TV Canada, now provides five live updates daily from the TSX and Bloomberg’s Toronto studio, and commencing May 24, Bloomberg TV Canada will be updating SiriusXM Canada listeners throughout the trading day with the latest business news and market moving action on Canada Talks Channel 167.

Bloomberg TV Canada has seen very good ratings successes in the months following its launch, according to the release. Mornings are the channel’s strongest daypart where the Bloomberg audience rivals that of the incumbent business news channel (that would be Bell Media’s BNN), “having surpassed it some weeks,” continues the release.

“Audience reach has grown from 151,000 in the first week (November 16) to 258,000 in the most recent confirmed week of data, representing an increase of over 70%. The channel has quickly established its own unique audience – 74% of the weekly tuning comes from viewers who choose Bloomberg over the other business news option,” adds the release, citing numbers from ratings service Numeris Canada, Total Canada, Individuals 2+.

These numbers come despite the fact the channel is not yet carried on either the Bell TV or Bell Fibe pay-TV platforms.

“We are thrilled with the progress Bloomberg TV Canada has made in the months following its launch.  We are making huge strides integrating our content into Bloomberg’s global platform and the viewers are responding. There are very exciting days ahead for Bloomberg TV Canada,” added Chris Fuoco, vice president sales and marketing at Channel Zero, in the release.
