SHANGHAI, CHINA – Huawei and the University of Toronto have struck a strategic research partnership agreement that will see the company invest over $3 million in research projects with the university over the next three years.
The new agreement, announced Saturday during Toronto Mayor John Tory’s visit to the company’s R&D facility in Shanghai, will establish a framework for how the relationship between U of T and Huawei is intended to grow, while also building a pipeline of talented young engineers who will contribute to the Canadian ICT ecosystem and tackle global technology challenges, reads the news release.
The framework will also broaden the scope of Huawei’s current interaction with the university in core R&D areas such as electrical and computer engineering and computer science, and will look to support research initiatives in areas such as mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, aerospace engineering and theoretical and applied physics.
“Our commitment to Canada is deep, and our ongoing investment with the University of Toronto reflects our confidence in the talent and outstanding network of ICT researchers that exist in Toronto and the Province of Ontario”, said Huawei Canada president Sean Yang, in the release.
“This new agreement with Huawei opens countless opportunities for collaboration beyond the areas of cloud acceleration and data-centre optimization, where we have long enjoyed strong partnerships,” added Professor Ted Sargent, vice-dean, research, for the faculty of applied science & engineering. “We look forward to exploring joint projects that build upon U of T Engineering’s world-leading research strengths in biomedical engineering, materials science and other fields."
