TORONTO – A growing number of Canadians would just rather watch TV on their laps or in their hands and don’t even have a TV set, says two new reports from Media Technology Monitor.
While most consumers receive television from cable, satellite or IPTV, a small number of them are taking advantage of getting their TV without a TV.
Highlights of the company’s TV My Way report include:
- Living without a paid TV service is nothing new, however, the incidence of those living without a paid TV service has grown over the recent years. Currently 20% of Canadians live without a paid linear TV service (cable, satellite or IPTV)
- Currently, 10% of Canadians fall into the TV MY Way (TMW) lifestyle. These are people who don’t pay for a traditional TV service nor do they have an antenna, but are still TV consumers.
- In terms of the two language markets, Anglophones are three times more likely to be TMW individuals than Francophones.
- TV My Way Canadians prefer to watch TV content on a personal devices such as a laptop or smartphone, in fact 40% of them don't even have an HDTV set.
The second report, dubbed Off-Air and Tuned-Out looks at those who get their TV off-air only, as well as those Canadians who have tuned-out altogether.
According to this report:
- Paid TV subscriptions are still very popular with 4 in 5 Canadians having one, however, there’s always been a segment of the population that live without a paid linear TV subscription – Off-Air and Tuned-Out Canadians. These groups have remained stable since the Fall of 2011 (6% and 4% respectively);
- Off-Air and Tuned-Out Canadians are much less interested in traditional TV than those who subscribe. They report spending roughly half as much time as TV subscribers watching traditional TV each week.
