OTTAWA – With Canada’s paid TV subscriptions in decline, fibre optic (IPTV) TV service subscriptions continue to grow and have overtaken satellite for second place behind cable distribution, says a new report from Media Technology Monitoring (MTM).

The report TV Distribution Fall 2015: An Analysis of the English-Language Market looks at trends in the way consumers access TV, what products/services they are using, how they bundle their services, and outlines user profiles for the various TV services.

Highlights from the report include:

– Cable’s market share in the multi-channel TV distribution environment declined from 43% to 40%, and satellite experienced a similar decline of 4 percentage points.  IPTV TV service subscriptions, however, have increased from 18% to 21%;

– IPTV subscribers vary from region to region, but are most common in Atlantic Canada; and

– Most Anglophones with a paid TV service still report being satisfied with their TV service.

MTM is the research arm of the CBC.
