OTTAWA – The Information and Communication Technology Council (ICTC) is partnering with visual discovery browser and augmented reality app Blippar to help foster interactive learning in schools.

ICTC said that it will use the app as a medium for their Future of Interactive Learning (FOIL) initiative, and teach high school students to engage with augmented reality (AR) as an innovative means of telling Canadian stories. Ultimately, the students will use AR to creatively commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017.

Blippar is the first visual discovery browser using augmented reality technology and artificial intelligence to transform how people connect with the world and to turn the world into an interactive learning environment.  When people are curious about an object or brand, they simply ‘blipp’ (scan) them to receive useful and entertaining content on their mobile device.

“We are thrilled to have an innovative company like Blippar on board for the launching of our AR pilot program”, said ICTC president and CEO Namir Anani, in the news release.  “Seeing as only one out of every twenty ICT jobs are held by youth currently, it is our aim that this partnership will help youth gain indispensable skills that will foster innovation and advance them in the ICT sector. Training young Canadians to fill the digital jobs of the future is extremely important, as innovative talent is critical to growth and success of the Canadian economy.”
