Canadians give CRTC an earful on broadband service

GATINEAU – Canadians seem to have a lot to say about their broadband service.

The CRTC said Tuesday that it has already received over 15,000 responses to its questionnaire on telecom services, including nearly 10,000 responses in the first 24 hours after making the questionnaire available five days ago.

The questionnaire is the second phase of the Commission’s review of basic telecommunications services, and asks Canadians to weigh in on the telecom services that they consider necessary, what they rely on most, and whether the cost of those services should be standardized across the country.

“The fact that many Canadians have responded so quickly tells us that our review of telecom services is timely, necessary and important”, said CRTC chairman and CEO Jean-Pierre Blais, in a statement.  “We look forward to hearing from even more people as we consider the services that Canadians need to fully participate in the digital economy. We have worked to make the process as simple as possible. So no matter where you live, we hope to hear from you.”

The responses to the questionnaire must be returned to the CRTC by February 29.  Those wishing to provide further views beyond the questionnaire may submit interventions on the issues and questions identified in the original notice of hearing by February 8, 2016.

The public hearing on these issues is scheduled to begin on April 11, 2016 in Gatineau.
