REGINA – SaskTel has targeted the residential areas of Estevan and Weyburn as next in line to receive its fibre optic network infiNET.
infiNET is being deployed through SaskTel’s Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) Program, a $670 million investment to deploy fibre optics directly to homes and upgrade the broadband network in Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Estevan, Swift Current, Yorkton, North Battleford and Prince Albert, the nine largest urban centers in the province.
Once connected, infiNET will allow customers to experience Internet speeds of up to 260 Mbps for downloading and 60 Mbps for uploading, plus enable the company's Max television customers to add up to seven high definition set top boxes with PVR capabilities in one home.
It is anticipated that construction will begin in March, and customers may expect to start having infiNET available to their homes by June 2016, says the company’s news release.
“infiNET will future proof SaskTel’s network by allowing upgrades for future speed increases without the need to replace the fibre optics,” said SaskTel president and CEO Ron Styles, in the release. “No other provider in Saskatchewan offers a direct to the home fibre connection and customers will see that infiNet features revolutionary speeds, allowing them to transfer files, download movies and music in a fraction of the time, and have uninterrupted video streaming and online chat.”
