LONDON, UK — The International Institute of Communications (IIC) is holding its 46th Annual Conference in Washington, DC, during Communications Policy and Regulation Week from October 5 to 8.
Competition policy is a key theme for the IIC and one that will be explored fully during talks at both the IIC’s annual conference (Oct. 7-8) and the International Regulators Forum (Oct. 5-6), where the issues will be examined from the perspective of the regulator, the operator and the content provider.
In the conference’s “Pathways for converged communications competition policy” session, panellists will examine how incentives for efficient private sector investment and innovation can be maintained and strengthened to ensure quality and reach, as well as considering whether and where interventions are needed to promote continuing competition. Contributors will look at perspectives on competition beyond the structural and functional phases exploring what truly innovative policy looks like and what’s best for the public interest. The conference’s full program and speaker list can be found on the IIC 2015 Annual Conference website.
During the International Regulators Forum session “Regulatory innovation: evolving for change”, speakers and delegates will examine whether modern-day regulators have the right tools in their kitbags to deal with competition in the converged telecom, media and technology sector and whether it’s time for a rethink of traditional objectives. Asking, what role the modern regulator should take, and what metrics could be used to evaluate the economic and social benefits of its regulation? The speaker panel will comprise chief executives and equivalents of national regulators from mature and emerging economies, with speakers confirmed from Sweden, Australia and Singapore and more confirmations expected over the coming weeks. The forum’s full program and speaker list can be found on the 2015 International Regulators Forum website.
