TORONTO – Close to 5.5 million Canadians tuned in to CBC’s coverage of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games’ opening ceremony on July 10, which was highlighted by a performance by Canada’s own Cirque du Soleil.

A combined average audience of 1.93 million viewers (2+) watched Friday’s opening ceremony on CBC-TV and CBC News Network. The audience peaked at 2.338 million viewers at 9:07 PM ET on CBC-TV as Team Canada made its way into the stadium during the parade of nations.

Overall, more than 10.6 million Canadians – or 30% of the population – have watched at least some part of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Pan Am Games coverage so far.

Other highlights from the opening weekend of the Pan Am Games include:

Pan Am Afternoon with host Andi Petrillo on CBC-TV averaged 630,000 viewers (2+) across Saturday and Sunday’s broadcasts;

– On the digital side, CBC’s Pan Am website (cbc.ca/panam) has generated nearly 4 million page views across the desktop and mobile versions and the CBC Sports App since July 10;

– Over that same period, cbc.ca/panam has generated almost 1 million visits across the desktop, mobile, and app; and

– More than 465,000 video views have been generated through the desktop and mobile sites and the app.

As the official broadcaster of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games in Canada, CBC/Radio-Canada has promised some 750 hours of coverage across TV, online and mobile platforms in both official languages.

TLN's opening weekend Spanish language coverage reached almost 750,000 Canadians (2+ cummulative reach), while some half a million viewers tuned in on July 12 for part or all of the day's events which included the men's soccer match between Canada and Brazil, in addition to gymnastics, diving, and judo competitions.

"750,000 viewers for the opening weekend of the Games is a great start", said TLN president Aldo Di Felice, in the news release.  "That figure represents about 50% of the entire Spanish speaking community in Canada. And this was on TLN TV’s main channel alone, excluding our all Spanish TV channel Univision Canada. Things will only grow from here over the next two weeks."

As the official Spanish language broadcasters of the Games, TLN and Univision Canada are dedicating 150 hours of coverage, in collaboration with ESPN Deportes, the American Spanish-language broadcaster of the Games.

The Pan Am Games continue through July 26, 2015, while the Parapan Am Games take place August 7–15, 2015 in Toronto and Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe Area.
