GITANMAAX, BC – CityWest has begun its fibre-to-the-home deployment in Gitanmaax (Old Hazelton), which it says will provide the community with high-speed Internet and home phone services.

The telco said that some residents will also be able to subscribe to fibre-based TV services, which is in its testing phase right now and will officially launch next month.

“Fibre-to-the-home is a very strong technology that creates a lot of potential for future development,” said CityWest CEO Don Holkestad, in the news release.  “We’re very proud to be able to offer this world-class service to the community of Gitanmaax.”

In building this fibre-to-the-home network for Gitanmaax, CityWest said that worked in partnership with the All Nations Trust Company through their ‘Pathways to Technology’ initiative, whose purpose is to connect or enhance high-speed Internet connectivity in remote First Nations communities in the province.

“By providing reliable high-speed Internet services, these communities will benefit from opportunities for education, health care, culture and economic development for First Nations people,” added Jamie Sterritt, community relations officer with All Nations Trust Company.

The Gitanmaax fibre build is the next step in CityWest’s plan to provide residents of Northwest B.C. with cutting-edge telecommunications products.  The company undertook a fibre build in New Remo in 2013, and, in the next few weeks, it will be starting a similar fibre build in Kispiox. In a few months, it will be announcing its biggest fibre build yet at another community in the Bulkley Valley.
