PRINCE GEORGE, BC – Telus said Tuesday that it has invested more than $2.5 million to build four new wireless sites bringing service to more than 40 kilometers of Highway 97 just north of Prince George for the first time.

The final site in the first series is now live, providing coverage to Highway 97 near Augustine Lake. The other three sites were built over the last six months near Summit Lake Road, Salmon River Road and Salmon Valley, respectively, and the company said that it anticipates that the second series of sites, currently under construction along the same highway, will go live before the end of the year.

“This stretch of highway is well-travelled, making wireless connection especially important when you need to call 911 for help in an emergency, or even just to let your family know where you are,” said Lance MacDonald, Telus’ GM for Northern British Columbia, in the news release. “I live in Prince George myself, and understand just how important a wireless connection can be to residents and drivers alike.”

The project is part of the 10-year Connecting British Columbia Agreement that Telus signed with the Province of B.C. in 2011. Under the terms of the agreement Telus will invest to connect more than 1,700 kilometres of unconnected highways with wireless service.
