TORONTO – Bell Media made the first round of cuts to its Toronto television operations Wednesday, less than a month after announcing that it intended to eliminate up to 120 positions this summer due to “financial pressure” related to advertising and subscription challenges across its TV services.
A company spokesperson confirmed to Cartt.ca that 91 positions were eliminated in its in-house production division, comprising of 72 union positions and 19 non-union positions. Many of the positions supported multiple channels, and therefore CTV, Much, M3, MTV, Space, and E! have all been affected.
The spokesperson added that the cuts come as “a result of stopping production on several in-house productions”. Those shows include After Degrassi, MTV News, Video on Trial and The Wedge.
According to an internal memo by Catherine Foti, Director of Human Resources, the company has declared 24 different job classification as surplus effective October 13, 2014, including 9 EFP Editors, 9 Associate Producers, and 10 Line Producers, all at Much.
