WINNIPEG – Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) is celebrating the online launch of Our Songs, an international project that shares contemporary Indigenous music with the world, co-produced by the eight members of the World Indigenous Television Broadcasters Network (WITBN).

Our Songs is an outcome of the third World Indigenous Television Broadcasting Conference held in Guovdageaidnu, Norway, in March 2012.  Indigenous music often reflects the essence and values of a culture, reads the news release, and through this collaboration, WITBN hopes to present the unity of spirit that exists in the Indigenous communities around the world.

The online version of Our Songs, available here, is an interactive world map of 44 music videos by international Indigenous artists, and shares the origins of music and languages via a new platform to create a completely new experience of Indigenous music.

“We are very excited and satisfied with the outcome of the production and artistic contributions of all our partners who participated in this initiative,” said Monika Ille, APTN’s executive director, programming and scheduling and one of the creators of this project, in the release.  “We have always wanted to work with other Indigenous broadcasters on international co-productions, but in reality we had to start with something small and of interest to a national and international audience. We can now see the results and quality of all our production partners, and we are very pleased with the outcome.”

Our Songs broadcast partners are Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (Canada), National Indigenous TV (Australia), NRK Sápmi (Norway), Māori Television (New Zealand), TG4 (Ireland), BBC ALBA (Scotland), ‘Ōiwi TV (Hawai’i) and Taiwan Indigenous TV (Taiwan).
