OTTAWA – Forty-one campus and community radio stations will receive $1.1 million from the latest round of funding of the Community Radio Fund of Canada’s (CRFC) Radiometres program.
In total, the CRFC awarded $1,185,500 for 37 projects that will help the stations improve their local programming, train volunteers, and involve community members in station activities.
For example, CFYT-FM in Dawson City, Yukon will partner with a community center to broadcast community and local Aboriginal events, CINQ-FM in Montreal, Quebec will develop a program produced by seniors, CHUO-FM in Ottawa, Ontario will host a series of workshops for the recording of live music acts, and CFFF-FM in Peterborough, Ontario will develop the production of radio dramas. This year also saw two first-time partnership projects where stations in rural British Columbia and francophone New-Brunswick will work together. Click here for the complete list of recipients.
“With increased funding per project and the new partnership option we initiated in this round, we hope to support collaborative and larger scope projects”, said president Jean-François Côté, in the announcement. “This endorses the idea of strength in numbers – a belief already entrenched in the community radio sector. We hope to encourage stations to create even more links and to share their best practices.”
Since its creation in 2007, the CRFC has distributed more than $4 million to the sector for the implementation of 273 initiatives. Of the more than 170 licenced Canadian campus and community stations, 103 stations have received funding from the CRFC.
The funding for Radiometres is provided by Canada’s private radio broadcasters through a portion of their Canadian Content Development (CCD) contributions, a funding mechanism established by the CRTC.
