TORONTO – Friday’s men's ice hockey semi-final game between Canada and the USA registered the highest online viewing audience ever to a CBC live event, with a (preliminary) average audience of more than 625,000 on CBC and Radio-Canada’s desktop and mobile devices combined.
That beats its previous record of 325,000, set during the women's ice hockey gold medal game on Thursday, a matchup that also featured Canada and the USA.
As of Saturday, 32.8 million Canadians (95% of the population) had tuned in to content from the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games on either a French or English platform, an increase of about 120,000 over Day 12 (February 19). Notably, the number of Canadians who had watched Olympic content online increased by more than one million on Day 13 (February 20), bringing the total to just over 8.6 million (1 in 3 Canadians) since the Games began on February 6.
