
TORONTO – More than 31.1 million Canadians have tuned in to CBC’s TV or online coverage of the Sochi Winter Olympics since the Games began on Feb. 6, and more than 8.4 million Canadians watched the Canadian men's hockey team beat Norway on Day 6, CBC announced Saturday.
CBC’s ratings for Thursday, Feb. 13, Day 6 of the Games, have been the highest day of the Games to date, including the opening ceremonies on February 6, with 22.8 million viewers across all platforms.
Television ratings for the opening ceremony on Feb. 6 was at about 19 million Canadians, and includes ratings for the live broadcast and repeats as well as online streams. Those ratings don’t quite match the viewership of the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, which were viewed live and in their entirety by 13.3 million Canadians. About 23 million watched at least part of that ceremony.
Day 6 also marked CBC’s highest reported weekday audience so far, with a total of 2.59 million viewers for CBC’s Olympic Daytime across all platforms. More than 8.4 million Canadians watched Canada beat Norway 3-1 on Thursday, with 1.4 million of those viewers watching online.
CBC reported its digital audience increased by 23% on Day 6, bringing the total number of Canadians who have watched Olympic content online since Feb. 6 to 5.1 million, according to BBM Canada.
CBC’s Olympic morning programming block on Day 5 (Wednesday, Feb. 12) reached an average audience of 1.255 million viewers, many of whom tuned in to watched the women’s hockey team battle against the U.S. More than 5.6 million Canadians tuned in to watch the game, with approximately 1 in 10 watching online.
