VANCOUVER and TORONTO – Rogers has unveiled a new machine-to-machine (M2M) solution that is says will “breathe new life into the Canadian retail experience”.

According to the company's presentation Tuesday at Wavefront Wireless Summits in Vancouver, the Mobile Shopper will allow customers to engage with brands in-store through mobile offers, applications and mobile payments technology all with their smartphone.  The platform works by combining a wireless network connection with mobile applications to deliver relevant content – such as daily offers and promotions – to customers that choose to opt in to the service on their mobile device. Retailers gain insights with this data to help them drive in-store traffic and provide added value to customers

RioCan, Canada's largest owner of shopping centres, is the first to trial the Rogers Mobile Shopper in select Ontario-based shopping centres.

"Access to real-time information and applications on mobile devices is changing how Canadians shop and make purchase decisions”, said Mansell Nelson, Rogers’ VP of advanced business solutions, in the announcement.  “Rogers Mobile Shopper gives Canadians a personal in-store shopping experience right to their smartphone.  For retailers, this connected solution allows them to deliver more value to customers, increase loyalty and drive revenue."

"While we've only just scratched the surface with Mobile Shopper, the opportunities we see with this platform are exciting and have the potential to transform our business," added Lyle Goodis, VP of corporate marketing at RioCan. "The Smart Wi-Fi solution we offer today is a bonus for mall visitors, and allows us to gather critical insights to solve real business challenges. We now have a better understanding of customer traffic in areas of the mall and peak times of day, so we can design more relevant and personalized marketing and engagement activities."
