Higher adoption of mobile technologies adds billions to Canada’s economy, says report

OTTAWA – Findings from a new report released today suggest that an increase of just 1% in the adoption of mobile technologies by Canadian businesses has the potential to add $26.7 billion to the country’s economy.

The report, based on new research from the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), indicates that Canadian businesses have not yet fully taken advantage of new opportunities associated with emerging mobile technologies; as a result, other countries globally are winning a competitive advantage.

“Our findings demonstrate the best practices with respect to encouraging greater mobile technologies adoption and the need for a forward-looking policy framework that works to keep Canadian telecommunications prices competitive and enhances adoption,” said Meenakshi Gupta, ICTC’s senior director,

As part of its research, ICTC surveyed 400 companies about adoption levels and the contribution of mobile technologies for increased enterprise competitiveness.

The report says nearly two out of three (64%) Canadian businesses report achieving increased efficiencies from mobile technologies adoption. One in two Canadian businesses report a reduction in operating costs achieved by using mobile technologies. Among these, 23% of businesses say they have reduced operating costs by up to 5%, 27% by between 5% and 10%, and 22% of businesses have reduced costs by over 20%.
