SaskTel unveils new fibre optic network

REGINA – SaskTel has launched its new Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) program, known as infiNET, with a goal of passing 40,000 homes by the end of this year.

The seven-year, $670 million dollar investment will deploy fibre directly to homes and upgrade the broadband network in the province’s nine largest urban centers – Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Estevan, Swift Current, Yorkton, North Battleford and Prince Albert.  Work is already underway in both Regina and Saskatoon.

Once connected, InfiNET will allow customers to experience Internet speeds of up to 200 Mbps for downloading and 60 Mbps for uploading, plus enable the company's Max television customers to add up to seven high definition set top boxes in one home.

“By deploying fibre to residences in these communities, SaskTel is not only providing Saskatchewan people with cutting edge technology they are also proactively planning for the increased network capacity that the continued unprecedented population growth in Saskatchewan will demand,” said Don McMorris, Minister Responsible for SaskTel, in Thursday's announcement.

“We have always been a leader in providing our customers with world class products and services and we are proud to invest in emerging technology that will enhance our customers’ communication experiences today, while also setting the groundwork for technology enhancements in the future,” added   SaskTel president and CEO Ron Styles.  “infiNET will future proof SaskTel’s network by allowing upgrades for future speed increases without replacing the fibre.”
