BlackBerry turns on hidden FM receivers in select devices

LAS VEGAS – Research In Motion has flipped the switch on the FM radio receivers built in to some of its BlackBerry smart phones.

RIM president and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis made the announcement Tuesday while demonstrating some of the enhancements in BlackBerry’s new 7.1 operating system.

The FM radio circuitry is already built in to the Curve 9360 and 9380 models and BlackBerry 7.1 provides users with a new app that allows them to tune in to local FM radio stations.  Listening to the FM radio does not require a data plan or use data services.

BlackBerry 7.1 will begin rolling out this week from carriers around the world and continue over the coming weeks.
