CRFC awards more than $250K in funding to community radio

OTTAWA – The Community Radio Fund of Canada will hand out more than $250,000 to 35 campus and community radio broadcasters this year.

The Ottawa-based organization said that it will disperse $267,742 through its Radio Talent Development Program and the Youth Internship Program (click here for the 2012 recipients).  The goal of both programs is to develop innovative local interest programming while providing mentorship, education, and training for broadcasters.

The programs are made possible by Canadian Content Development (CCD) contributions from Astral Media Radio, totalling $1.4 million over seven years.  Since the CRFC was founded in 2008, it has distributed more than $760,000.

“We have established an amazing track record these past four years,” said president John Harris Stevenson, in the announcement.  “We’ve funded more than a hundred very diverse initiatives, all across Canada, in multiple languages, resulting in more than a thousand hours of new local programming.”

The CRFC will release its 'Radiometres' program this summer, thanks to additional CCD contributions from Canada’s commercial broadcasters. With the new funding, the CRFC said that it will distribute up to $1 million this year, with individual stations able to apply for up to $20,000 through an outcomes-based model.
