TORONTO – Comwave is going head-to-head with Skype after launching a new app for smart phones and tablets called ePhone.
The telco said that its VoIP app bridges the gap between smart phone, computer, and landline phone users by allowing all of them to communicate for free, regardless if they have ePhone or not, by including a real telephone number that allows them to receive an incoming call from around the world.
ePhone is free to try on Android Play (formally Android Market) and costs $30 per year after the trial. Versions for the BlackBerry Playbook, Mac and PC are also available now, and ePhone for the iPhone, iPod and iPad are slated for release in the coming weeks. The app also includes free calling to 57 countries for the entire year.
"Having a Toronto or New York phone number on your cell phone or laptop computer is powerful especially when you travel and want to get around those annoying roaming fees," said president Yuval Barzakay, in the announcement.
