10-digit dialing starts Sunday in Manitoba

WINNIPEG – Ten-digit dialing will be introduced Sunday in Manitoba to help meet a growing demand for phone numbers in the province.

Starting July 29, local calls dialed with seven digits may be interrupted by a network message reminding callers that they must dial 10 digits when making local calls. Calls will continue to be connected until October 20, after which time seven-digit local calls will not be completed.

All three-digit numbers including 911 emergency service will not require the inclusion of an area code.

The new area code 431 will be added in the province starting November 3, joining the current 204 area code.  The new area code will be assigned only when the existing inventory of 204 numbers is used up.
