TORONTO – Is Kory Teneycke coming back to run Sun TV News? A story in the Globe and Mail says yes, next week.
Sun TV News, a new TV news channel which will launch sometime in the first quarter of 2011, is Quebecor Media’s first foray into English language Canadian news and Teneycke, before his resignation in late summer under a cloud of controversy, touted the channel as a distinct new voice that would challenge the establishment at every turn.
Teneycke is a former senior advisor to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and at vice-president development, was the force behind the channel as it moved through regulatory channels in 2010. However, controversy dogged the project and QMI had to make three separate applications to the CRTC for a channel license until the company was finally granted a category two digital license late in 2010.
Teneycke quit in September.
However, when contacted by Cartt.ca to clarify whether or not the Globe report was true, QMI’s vice-president of corporate affairs, Serge Sasseville, had this to say in an e-mail: “We do not wish to make any comment regarding Mr. Teneycke.”
Sun TV News is expected to launch initially as a rebrand of QMI’s Toronto OTA TV station, Sun TV.
