TORONTO – Global News shed some light on its plans for the new morning news shows that it committed to as part of Shaw Communication’s purchase of its former parent Canwest Broadcasting.
The broadcaster said Tuesday that it has hired former Breakfast Television anchor Liza Fromer to front the Toronto edition of The Morning Show, which will debut early this Fall from a new street-front studio currently under construction on Bloor Street East in downtown Toronto. She will be joined by Dave Gerry, Kris Reyes, and two cast members to be announced at a later date.
New morning shows will also appear at Global Maritimes in late-November; Global Winnipeg in mid-September; Global Regina in late-August; and Global Saskatoon in mid-September. In addition, Global Edmonton and Global Calgary will both be expanding their current morning shows to seven days-a-week with the inclusion of Sundays, running from 7-10 am MT beginning this September. Staffing information and other details will be made available in the coming weeks.
“With the launch of these new morning shows, Global News is capitalizing on an opportunity to strengthen our relevance and immediacy to local TV viewers," said Troy Reeb, Shaw Media’s VP of news, in the announcement. "As we expand our footprint nationally over the coming months, Canadians will be given the opportunity to experience an even greater selection of Global News content created by our award-winning team of reporters and producers."
Global News said that it is also preparing to launch a new Sunday morning current affairs and political program tentatively known as The West Block. Slated to begin this September live from Ottawa, the new program will feature a panel of political experts discussing the issues making headlines from the nation’s capital.
