Windows Phone 7 sparks wave of new smart phones

AFTER MICROSOFT OFFICIALLY launched Windows Phone 7, the next major version of its mobile operating system, a flurry of press releases hit Cartt.ca’s inbox about new phones that will utilize the new technology.

HTC Corporation unveiled five new Windows Phone 7 smart phones – HTC 7 Surround, HTC 7 Mozart, HTC 7 Trophy, HTC 7 Pro and HTC HD7.  The company described Windows Phone 7 as "carefully crafted to help users get more done in fewer steps" thanks a unique Hub and Tile interface.  The Windows Phone 7 Hubs offer quick and easy access to a user’s most recent information including People, pictures, games, music and video, Office and Marketplace content.  Windows Phone 7 also integrates with many popular Microsoft consumer services such as Xbox LIVE, Windows Live, Bing and Zune.

The HTC 7 Surround will be available exclusively with Telus in Canada beginning later this month.

Samsung Electronics Canada announced the release of the Samsung Focus, a lightweight smart phone equipped with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, designed to offer unparalleled picture quality, even in the harshest lighting conditions, as well as smudge and scratch resistant technology.  It is powered by a 1GHz processor, contains 8GB of internal memory, expandable by 32GB micro SD and comes with a 5 mega pixel camera with flash, capable of capturing high resolution video and images while also offering superior battery utilization.

The Samsung Focus will be available exclusively from Rogers.  Pricing and availability details will be announced at a later date.

Bell Mobility announced that it will be the exclusive provider of the new LG Optimus Quantum, a Windows Phone 7 smart phone operating on its HSPA+ network.  It will be the first Windows Phone 7 device in the Canadian market to offer both a 3.5 inch touch screen and a full keyboard.

The LG Optimus Quantum uses a simple user interface and gesture-based navigation.  For a truly innovative glance and go experience, active tiles on the home screen – including email, text and social network updates – are constantly updated to let the user see what’s going on in their favourite services without having to open the apps.

In addition to a re-designed user interface and home screen, the way users interact with their applications has also been completely overhauled.  Hubs provide a complete view of services and features grouped by topic including Xbox, People, Office, music and videos, pictures and Microsoft Marketplace.

Bell said that the device will be available later this year.
