IPTV growth to triple in next three years, says report

Despite the global economic slowdown, IPTV growth will “skyrocket” in the next three years, says research from In-Stat.

The high-tech market research firm predicts that subscribers to telco TV, which include TV delivered by telecom operators via IP as well as other technologies, will grow more than three-fold by the end of 2012.

New Telco TV players are entering the market around the world, while existing players are increasing their footprint, penetration, content, and range of services, the research concluded. Plus, recent regulatory changes have given telco TV “a real boost,” particularly in the key markets of Brazil, Korea, and India.

"A number of new countries, including places as varied as Montenegro, Jordan, and Ghana, saw the launch of their first commercial IPTV offerings in 2008," says Michelle Abraham, an In-Stat analyst, in the press release. "Only a few markets, like Japan and Argentina, remain hamstrung by restrictions that hinder incumbent operators."
