VANCOUVER – Canadians can’t seem to get enough of the Olympics.
7.3 million viewers watched the first gold medal won on Canadian soil as Alexandre Bilodeau triumphed in the Men’s Moguls, making it one of the most-watched sporting events in Canadian history. Coverage of the event peaked at 9.7 million viewers, with 37% of the population (12.3 million) watching some part of the historic event, while an average audience of 6.3 million viewers, including 1.4 million Francophones, watched the Victory Ceremony in which Bilodeau was presented with the medal.
5 million viewers watched Kristina Groves win bronze in the Ladies’ 3000m final in Long Track Speed Skating, while Rogers Sportsnet broke a ratings record for the second day in a row with 1.9 million viewers for Jeremy Wotherspoon’s Men’s 500m Long Track Speed Skating race. The network recorded 1.6 million viewers for the Pairs Figure Skating on Sunday.
By Day 4 of the Games, websites CTVOlympics.ca and RDSolympiques.ca surpassed the previous record of page views during an Olympic Games. With 48.5 million page views to-date during Vancouver 2010, the sites broke the record of 45 million set at Beijing 2008.
