HALIFAX – Canada’s wireless telecommunications industry has launched an initiative for Canadians to recycle their old cell phones and other wireless devices called ‘Recycle My Cell’.
The free, national program lets users find out where and how to properly dispose of their cell phones, smart phones, pagers, aircards, batteries, chargers and other accessories, regardless of carrier, brand or condition.
To locate a list of the 10 closest recycling drop-off sites, consumers can enter their postal code at www.RecycleMyCell.ca or call 1-888-797-1740. Equipment can also be mailed in after printing a postage-paid label from the website.
Organized by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) in conjunction with cell phone service providers, handset manufacturers and recycling companies, the goal of program is to raise awareness about cell phone recycling and to keep the equipment out of landfills. Proceeds from the recycled wireless devices will benefit local and national charities.
"Canada’s wireless companies have long been leaders in developing green business strategies," said CWTA president and CEO Bernard Lord, in a statement. "The new Recycle My Cell program further illustrates that thinking green doesn’t need to be complicated, yet the results can have a major impact on protecting our environment and enriching the communities in which we live."
