CTV launches HD in Calgary

CALGARY – Just in time for the Super Bowl, CTV said officially today it is broadcasting a high definition signal in Calgary.

(Which may not be good news for fans of American Super Bowl commercials… more on that below)

CTV HD Calgary is now transmitting from CTV Calgary’s Patina Rise headquarters and is the only broadcaster now transmitting over-the-air in HD in Calgary. CTV is also the only one to have HD transmitters in all three markets metered by BBM Nielsen Media Research, Vancouver and Toronto being the other two.

CTV HD Calgary can be accessed by viewers with an HD-capable television equipped with a digital tuner and antenna on Channel 4.1. Additionally, CTV HD Calgary will replace CTV HD East on Channel 210 for Shaw Cable subscribers in Calgary and surrounding areas.

This means, too, that Shaw Cable will have to simultaneously substitute the CTV HD signal over its NBC HD feed. So Shaw Cable high definition customers who have been able to see the oft-ballyhooed U.S. ads – because the CRTC does not require distributors to insert an inferior analog signal over top of a digital one – will now see the Canadian advertising from CTV instead.

“Viewers can now watch Calgary’s most-watched programs in high definition without time-shifting,” said Len Perry, general manager and vice-president, CTV Calgary. “As Calgary’s number one television station, we are enormously proud to lead the way with this investment in our viewers.”

This is the latest piece of the broadcaster’s multi-stage rollout of HD, added the press release.
