Telefilm sets its priorities

MONTREAL – Telefilm Canada said that their priority this year will be the transition toward “a new model of support for the television and interactive-media industries”, also known as the Canadian Media Fund, while staying focused on its core objectives.

The federal cultural organization administers the funding programs for the Canada Feature Film Fund, the Canadian Television Fund, and the Canada New Media Fund. The Canadian Media Fund, announced last month and coming April 2010, will be a combination of the existing Canadian Television Fund and the Canadian New Media Fund.

Now in its fourth of a five year corporate plan called ‘From cinemas to cell phones: Telefilm Canada responds to the multiplatform challenge’, the agency pledged, among other initiatives, to revitalize the Canada Feature Film Fund to increase its co-production activities and exploit emerging markets, as well as develop new initiatives to increase the access of Canadian films on various platforms.

“Canadians will continue to have more access to Canadian content on a multitude of platforms,” said chair Michel Roy, in the announcement. “Going backwards is not an option. The impact of digital technologies and of the value chain of digital media will therefore remain a central theme in our strategic initiatives.”

Telefilm’s fundamental objectives will remain intact – to increase audiences, to develop the potential of the audiovisual industry, and to administer public and private funds in an exemplary manner, the announcement continued.

Calling the satisfaction of its clients its “main performance indicator”, Telefilm also announced greater consultation with the Canadian audiovisual industry, including its first public meeting held April 8 and webcast live.
