TORONTO – CBC Radio One ranked first in Toronto and Vancouver between March 2 and April 26, 2009, according to BBM’s S2 2009 top-line results.
Its share of listening increased from 8.9% in S1 to 10% in the competitive Toronto market, and CBLA’s Metro Morning with Andy Barrie remains the city’s top morning show with a record 14.2% share of listening. In Vancouver, CBU captured a 12.4% share for the March through April period, up from 11.0% in S1, and its morning show, The Early Edition with Rick Cluff, also ranked first with an18.2% share.
When coupled with Radio 2’s national figures, the combined network captured a 15.4% share of listening, breaking its old record of 14.1% from last Fall.
"These results are a brilliant ray of light that comes during a rather dark week at CBC," said Richard Stursberg, executive vice president of CBC, in a press release. "As we’ve said many times over the past couple of years, we succeed when we matter to Canadians. This is further proof of our success."
Second place in the Toronto market went to Rogers’ CHFI, which slipped from 10.0% in S1 to 9.2% in this period, followed by CTV’s CHUM FM which dipped to 8.1% from 8.8% earlier this year.
In Vancouver, Corus’ news talk CKNW ranked second behind CBC with a 10.7% share, up slightly from 10.1% in the December through March period. CTV’s contemporary CHQM FM rounded out the top three with a 7.8% share, down from its 8.8% in S1.
Highlights from the Calgary market saw both Corus’ news talk CHQR and Astral’s Top 40 CIBK FM push past CBC to nail down first and second spots at 9.5% and 9.3%, respectively. CBC Radio One (CBR) was third with a 8.9% share, down from 10.8% in S1.
The Montreal market recorded data from January 26 to April 26, 2009, using the portable people meters (PPM). Astral Media-owned news talk station CJAD continued to dominate the Anglo market with a 25.3% share, followed by its Virgin station CJFM FM at 16.9%, and Corus’ “lite” rock focused CFQR FM with 15.0%.
The leaders in Montreal’s Franco markets were CFGL FM with a 15.3% share, CITE FM with a 12.4% share, and CHMP FM with a 12.0% share.
