CRTC to consider numerous TV applications next month

OTTAWA – The new year is shaping up to be a busy one for broadcasters and the CRTC alike.

In addition to reviewing Mediadenovo’s request to sell ad time on US specialty channels’ local avails, the CRTC will consider a number of other applications at its hearing scheduled for February 22.

Astral Media has applied for three new broadcasting licences for national, English-language Category 2 specialty television networks. Adrenaline would air action movies and series “primarily driven by a fast-paced fictional plot featuring car chases, explosions, special effects, or martial arts” according to its application, while
Superstar will be devoted to romance, with programming consisting of relationship-themed game shows, magazine style programs featuring romantic vacation resorts and classic romantic feature films and series.

And the application forTV-Time says it will feature action and adventure programming that runs the gamut from contemporary action and adventure films and series, to classical westerns, rodeo and western horse shows.

A few new sports channels could be hitting the airwaves, too.

CBC has applied for a national, French-language Category 2 television network called Radio-Canada Sports which it says will focus on Canadian amateur and “under-represented” sports.  Toronto Maple Leafs Network, owners of Leafs TV and Raptors NBA TV, has applied for a national, English-language Category 2 network known as Mainstream Sports which it says will “be dedicated to all aspects of sports” with an emphasis on mainstream Canadian professional sports.

FDR Media Group Inc., on behalf of a corporation to be incorporated, has applied for three national, niche, third-language ethnic Category 2 specialty networks called Bollywood Times HD TV, Desi Hindi HD TV and Mehndi HD TV, respectively.

The Commission will also review an application for The Single Parent Channel, a national, English-language Category 2 specialty television consisting of instructional and educational programs.

The deadline for comments and interventions is January 27, 2010.
