WINNIPEG – Industry Canada has approved Craig Wireless’ request to convert its multi-point distribution system (MDS) spectrum in the Vancouver area to Broadband Radio Service (BRS) spectrum.
This approval will allow Craig to provide WiMAX-enabled (4G) service in the Vancouver and lower mainland regions of British Columbia, while at the same time allowing it to continue to provide broadcasting distribution services, the company announced.
“This new license will be the first of its kind to be awarded by Industry Canada and is a milestone event in the history of our company that enhances our presence in the Canadian wireless Internet market," said Boyd Craig, co-CEO of Craig Wireless. "With this development, we are positioned to enable an entirely new mobile Internet experience to individuals and businesses in the Vancouver market. The WiMAX ecosystem is developing rapidly and provides a fully mobile broadband user experience that is unparalleled using any existing technology. We look forward to using our international WiMAX experience in Canada."
In accordance with Industry Canada policies relating to the conversion of MDS spectrum, Craig will return approximately one-third of its MDS spectrum in the Vancouver region to Industry Canada. The new spectrum license of 61 MHz has been awarded on an interim basis until the completion of a consultation process by Industry Canada.
